Adam Sandler’s contractual obligation for Netflix is structured as a “one for them, one for me” deal. With Happy Gilmore 2 is moving forward, so must we also have Sandler rounding up his cronies for one last laughless romp foisted upon us.
Trying for a more meta angle to appeal to the Zoomers as well as his older fans this time, the families involved in this vacation mirror the “celebrities’” actual circumstances: Rob Schneider has alienated his adult daughter along with most of America and can’t get booked anywhere except on Tucker Carlson. David Spade is like a Bizarro Leonardo DiCaprio- still single at 60 and trying to salvage his career riding Dana Carvey’s coattails on a podcast, metaphorically rolling the dice on whether people find him more or less annoying when they can’t see him. Kevin James is always there in the background just trying not to be a net negative to the rest of the proceedings. Chris Rock makes a brief cameo at the beginning at the airport and ends up getting on the wrong plane, probably on purpose.
The story revolves around the group trying to yet again recapture their glory days, this time on a Caribbean vacation. When a tropical storm dampens the proceedings they are forced to try to connect on a basic human level under a gazebo with a couple beer buckets to smooth over the sour grapes and scorn bubbling just below the surface, and before long hilarious fist fights and name-calling break out and lead to prolonged episodes of ugly man-crying. Get ready for fun for the whole family this November, just in time for your own uncomfortable get-togethers around the holidays!
