With a name like Pokémom, this was either going to be a heartfelt story about a mother helping her son learn the importance of friendship by encouraging him to enter a local TCG tournament or a MILF-hunting club where the guys “got a catch ‘em all.” Knowing our past history, it’s pretty easy to predict just which direction we went in…
After leaving her deadbeat, alcoholic ex-husband, Christine and her son, Jimmy, try to start a new life half a country away. Unfortunately, little Jimmy is a handful and the local students don’t take a liking to his monkeyshines. Christine recognizes that Jimmy is fascinated by a new collectible card game, and encourages him to join local tournaments by helping him build decks and purchase rare cards from unsavory dealers. The team does so well, that Jimmy qualifies for the first national tournament and the mother/son bond strengthens. That is, until the court orders that Jimmy be returned to his father. See, Christine moved him out of state without consent, and now little Jimmy is ripped away. Desperate to see her son again, Christine qualifies for the national tournament herself in the hopes of meeting Jimmy in the finals where she can tell him how much she loves him.
Everything goes according to plan and the two meet in the final, until Christine realizes that winning the tournament doesn’t mean she wins Jimmy back. Does Christine throw the tournament and start him on a path to a successful YouTube career? Or, does she try and win that sweet prize money herself?
