Picture it, winter 1995. The Squirrel Nut Zipper’s The Inevitable was on its way to lifting a nation out of it’s grunge-induced melancholy, Mallrats showed a young Ben Affleck’s range, and Jason Rubin was about to put Sony at the top of the video game food chain. But for recent college grad Mark Sampson, 1995 was only about to get worse. After a one-night stand Mark’s “date” gets pregnant, he takes a job with the federal government to prove that he is responsible and can support them all. The only problem is that with a Democrat in the White House, Republicans suddenly care about things like budgets, deficits, and family values again…and on December 16th, the 104th Congress shuts down the federal government. With no impasse in sight – and without gainful means of employment, Mark plans an elaborate kidnapping by taking his cue from successful movies like Pulp Fiction, Boys in the Hood, Reservoir Dogs, and Muppet Treasure Island. Mark and a motivated crew of disgruntled federal employees will kidnap Newt Gingrich and take to the high seas in search of plunder. Why kidnap Newt? Who knows, but it feels extreme. As was the style at the time. Set sail for international intrigue, mystery, love, and the extremes that one man will go to just to prove that he isn’t a deadbeat in this Renny Harlin directed comeback vehicle.
