Maid in China

Look, COVID precautions have really hit Hollywood hard. PPE costs alone have been estimated to be between $300,000 and $500,000 per TV episode, and studios are looking for high-concept/low-cost alternatives with foreign partners to split the bill. Here at A Pitch a Day, we want to help…which is why we present a pitch that is sure to get China interested.

Zijing Wu is a smart, talented young Chinese woman who dreams of a career in the lucrative Cantopop music scene. When she is offered the opportunity to be the “assistant” to Leon Lai – one of the Four Heavenly Kings of Cantopop, she jumps on it. But, Zijing’s definition of assistant is different than Leon’s. While she thinks she’ll be coordinating his schedule, sitting in meetings, and learning the music business he demands she chauffeur him around, clean his homes, and dress in demeaning ways. Over time a love will blossom, a petulant man-child will grow up, and she’ll inspire him to musical heights with lyrics like I can't believe I could be the one/To be with you under the morning sun. It’s Beauty and the Beast meets Maid in Manhattan meets The King and I meets…well, you get the idea.
