Nintendo sidesteps their usual family-friendly fare with this licensed movie produced by Blumhouse. The Mario Bros. plumbing business is struggling due to the Italian duo’s mediocre skill set and the fact that they gibber incomprehesibly to potential customers, so they are forced to work a city contract cleaning the sewer pipes. When Luigi runs afoul of a strange mushroom-covered creature the size of a large dog in the tunnels below NYC he is gripped with terror. Mario instinctively jumps on the creature repeatedly, sending pieces flying including one into Luigi’s mouth. Though initially repulsed Luigi discovers something.
“It’sa meat Mario! And it’sa delicious!” Soon the brothers are sourcing this delicious new protein and are operating a successful Italian sausage shop, attracting the favor of neighboring baker Peach along with hundreds of customers. Soon Luigi starts noticing some “changes” like mushrooms sprouting between his toes and the compulsion to walk undeterred in a straight line toward his brother to try and kill him, and Mario realizes that before long half of Queens is going to be following in his brother’s footsteps. Can he fend off a horde of myconic horrors continually pursuing him? The Walking Dead’s Greg Nicotero directs this gore-filled hard-R movie in tribute to all the Nintendo fans who over the years bitched about their games being too kiddie and soft.
